When you buy property in Merida, you are buying in one of the geologically most unusual real estate markets in the Americas. The entire Yucatan Peninsula sits atop a karst limestone platform — an ancient seabed transformed over millions of years into a porous, cave-riddled landscape. Underneath virtually every neighborhood in Merida, at depths ranging from 2 meters to over 50 meters, lies a network of caves, cenotes, and subterranean rivers.
For most buyers this remains a background fact. For some, it becomes a very expensive problem.
